How to play Euchre
Euchre is a fast trick-taking game for four players in two partnerships, played here with a 24-card deck (9 through ace). Call trump, take at least three of the five tricks and be the first partnership to 10 points. This table plays the Stick the Dealer variant.
Key rules
- Twenty-four cards, five dealt to each of the four seats, plus a four-card kitty.
- Two calling rounds: order up the upcard suit in round one or call another suit in round two; if everyone passes twice, the dealer must choose (Stick the Dealer).
- You must follow the effective lead suit while you hold it.
- The highest trump wins the trick; with no trump played, the highest card of the lead suit wins.
Terms
- Trump
- The suit that outranks every other suit for one hand.
- Right Bower
- The Jack of the trump suit — the highest card in the game.
- Left Bower
- The Jack of the other same-colour suit; it counts as trump, not its printed suit.
- Euchre
- When the defenders stop the makers from taking three tricks — 2 points to the defenders.
- Going alone
- The maker plays without their partner; sweeping all five tricks alone scores 4 points.
